Everyone asks “What’s next?” and somehow that question starts to sound like a verdict. I’m fresh off a long road trip, back with my family for the summer, and thinking about what I wish I could tell my high school self now that I’ve graduated college. If you feel behind, uncertain, or tired of trying to map your entire future before you’ve even lived it, you’re not alone and you’re not failing.

We talk honestly about anxiety and pressure around choosing a major, picking a career, and figuring out a calling at 18. I share why it’s okay if your path changes, why you can take life one day at a time, and how trusting God’s timing can quiet the fear of missed opportunities. We also get real about friendships: how to be intentional without trying to juggle everyone, why seasonal friendships can still be God honoring, and how to let a chapter close without gossip or resentment.

Then we slow down and read all of 2 Corinthians 4 (NLT), line by line, and let it speak. We sit with the image of “fragile clay jars,” the reminder that our power is from God, and the call to tell the truth without twisting Scripture. We also talk spiritual reality in a broken world, how to serve others with humility, and why “pressed on every side, but not crushed” is more than a quote when you’re walking through suffering.

If this encourages you, subscribe, share it with a friend who’s in a transition, and leave a review so more people can find the show. What part of your life feels most uncertain right now?

Summer Update And Reset

SPEAKER_00

Hello everyone and welcome back to the Savior the Savior podcast. I'm your host, Avery, and this is my co-star, best friend, Phil in the Blank, buddy, who is just laying back behind me and people watching. I am so excited to be with you today, and I am no longer in Florida for the summer. I made a 16 and a half hour road trip. It was it was 14 hours and 17 minutes when I started my road trip at 5 in the morning, and I arrived in Dayton, Ohio at 16 and a half hours, and then the next day I drove up three and a half hours to this beautiful place that I call my second home. And you can't see it, but in front of me there is a lake, but it is really gross right now, and because there was storms and stuff, and so all the debris is just like yeah, it just does not look pretty, guys. Lake days aren't aren't always pretty days, and that's just the reality of it. I think it's you know, I mean, I feel like the ocean's kind of like that too, but I feel like for the lake, you definitely are like I'm looking out, and it's not like oh one part is blue, it's like the entire thing looks like mud uh was mixed in, and it's really interesting, and it's pretty rough too, so pretty crazy. But I am grateful to be here and I'm excited for the summer and just very blessed to be able to spend it with my family and enjoy this spectacular view because it truly is beautiful.

Advice For The Version Of You

SPEAKER_00

So I don't really have a whole lot planned for today's episode. Kind of was just thinking about kind of going over some of the things that I would have told myself if I was graduating high school because now I've just graduated college, so crazy, so exciting, praise God, and it's three years later, which is crazy, and I feel like there's just a lot has changed and in a good way, and yeah, so I just kind of wanted to do that. Okay, so basically, what I would have told myself in high school, I probably would have emphasized on like the things that are really worth my mind worrying about. I think the tendency is that we honestly worry about a lot more than we really need to, and I think that is definitely like in high school and in middle school, there's just so much, not even just then, but in general, there's so much pressure, and I feel like I felt that definitely in high school of like know what you're gonna do, where you're gonna go, and everybody's just asking you the question of what's next. And not only in high school do you get that question once you graduate college, you get that question, and even after that, people are always gonna be asking you that question. That question is just always gonna come up, and I feel like there's always everybody's just there's so much pressure on know what you're gonna do, and so many people don't even step into their plan for ministry, what their plan for ministry, or they don't even step into like what they do for the rest of their life, and even at that, like people change their careers so much. Like, if you were to ask, I'm sure 10 people like where is your career now, and what did you do 10 years ago and 10 years before that? Everybody's answers changes, like nobody really stays in the same career for your whole life. So, why are we stressing so much about the fact that we're supposed to find what we're supposed to do for the rest of our life and figure that out by you know the ripe age of 18? Like, that is so young, and it's like your vocation changes and your career changes, and it's not always the same, and there's no pressure on that. Like, that's okay, you don't have to have it figured out. And I think I think high school me would be appreciative to to know that, but I think a lot of even the high schoolers I talk to now, it's just yeah, so it's okay if you don't have it figured out. Truly, hear me out. It's okay if you feel like you're behind, but there is no behind, you know, and just rest in that and just take it day by day and job by job. Like you could can graduate school and then go into a job that has nothing to do with your major, and it's not gonna be the end of the world, like it'll be okay. And I feel like the Lord will open doors when he wants to open doors, and he will do that as you are faithful and as you obey him and listen to his voice, and yeah, he will continue to guide you, and so just kind of wanted to encourage that, and then I feel like also, but I feel like one thing that is really important when if I was gonna like graduate high school again, I would definitely tell myself to be intentional with friendships and intentional in the like in my long-term friendships too.

Choosing Core Friends Without Guilt

SPEAKER_00

I think college will come a lot of seasonal friends, which is not always a bad thing, and even high school in middle school, like you are battling a ton of friendships, and you kind of have to figure out like who are your core people and who am I going to invest in and be intentional with because you just can't be intentional with everybody. That's a really hard thing. Like, as much as I wish I could be intentional with everybody, you just can't. I mean, I guess to some extent you probably could, but maybe you feel like you're juggling the world and too much and you're so busy all the time, and that might not be the healthiest, you know. But I feel like having a couple core people where it's like, oh, like these are definitely my people, and you can still be friends with a more people, like that's not to say you can't, but it is hard to be more intentional of like, oh, I'm gonna text this person, I'm gonna call this person, I'm going to, you know, write this person letters, whatever it is. It just can be harder to do that the more people you add to your plate. It feels like the less intentional you might be. So I would just like remind myself, and I also would be like, I don't think I would change anything about how I did college. It was great, you know. My freshman year, I got to know a lot of people, and I think that's how it should be. Like you're just connecting with a lot of people and you're trying to figure out who your group is and who your people are. And I think that's great. I think you should do that. I think you should, you know, figure out who your people are and hang out with a ton of people and figure out who you can be yourself around, and figure out who you can be yourself around, and whatever that may look like. And you know, but there are some friendships that's like, oh, maybe this wasn't like a long-term friendship, and that's okay. There's literally no pressure, no harm in that. Like, there doesn't have to be bad bad blood, or like there doesn't that doesn't mean like that person's a bad person or anything like that. It's just you can't juggle 45 friendships, and you know, it's just it's just a lot harder too. So yeah. And so yeah, I would say definitely continue to be intentional with friendships and but also yeah, recognizing like there is seasonal friendships, but it's okay to have seasonal friendships, they can still play a purpose in your life and they can still be good for you, and they can still be God honoring, even if they're seasonal, you know, just because they're seasonal doesn't make them not God honoring. And I think for so I think maybe it was just pressure, maybe it was ever, but for the friendships that didn't last for me or weren't like I felt like every friendship had to be a lifelong friendship, and that's just like not true. And I think I felt the pressure that it had to be a lifelong friendship, and if there was it was not a lifelong friendship, it was either something like they were doing wrong or I was doing wrong or someone was doing something wrong. And I don't necessarily think that that's it. I just think some friendships are just seasonal, and that's just how they were meant to be. And you know, they said things and they spoke life into your life in a season and at a time, which was so great and so powerful, and they were a friend to you when you needed it, or you were a friend to them when they needed it, or you spoke life over them, but it doesn't mean it wasn't God honoring if it didn't last more than you know, two semesters or a semester or longer than middle school or high school after you guys went to college and it was harder to keep in contact. So it does it doesn't mean that it's not a bad thing if it's only a seasonal friendship. Like we don't have to have bad blood with people just because it was a seasonal friendship and we fell out of contact, you know. Like that doesn't mean you have to gossip about them or say bad stuff about them because that just doesn't mean it just doesn't mean they're a bad person or any of that. And so yeah, I would remind myself that for sure. And

Filtering Opinions Through Scripture

SPEAKER_00

I also I would honestly just remind myself that God's opinion is really the only one that matters, you know. I think even in the Christian atmosphere communities and stuff, there's still you could still feel pressure from outside voices and people having opinions, you know, people can still be Christian and still have opinions, and it can be hard to know what opinions you should carry like a lot of weight with, like, who should I what opinions should I weigh like a lot and say like oh this really impacts my decision, and so it can be easy to for people to be like, oh yeah, your life should look like this or your life should look like that, and no one knows what your life is gonna look like is set for the Lord, and that is okay, and you're already not gonna have a lot of control over things, and so you might as well just give it to the one who does have control, and there's no reason for me to let other voices be louder than the voice of God's when he is the one with all the authority, all the power, all the glory, everything that I have and I am is because of him. And so why would I let anyone else's voices diminish or downplay what he has from me because they have an opinion, which is not always wrong. Like, I think godly opinions are important, but I also think at the end of the day, like the only the one opinion that matters most is God's, and you just have to be really careful listening to the people around you, and if they're putting words in God's mouth or if they're saying stuff that's unbiblical, like you have to take everything really with a grain of salt and make sure you're fact-checking it with scripture and fact-checking it with God's character according to scripture, and you're also taking it to prayer yourself and making sure you're asking God on your own and by yourself on your own time rather than just listening to what everybody else around you is telling you and just going with that. I don't know. Maybe this I might feel like I'm a little bit rambling, but we're just gonna we're just gonna keep going with it. Okay, so those are just kind of a few things that I would definitely remind myself like not caring about other people's opinions, being intentional in friendships, and even seasonal friendships, like you should still be intentional in those, you know, even if they don't last that long. But it's okay to have seasonal friendships. And it's okay to not have your life figured out, and also be okay with like figuring out what's worth your brain power to worry about and what's not worth it to worry about. Like things you can't control, not worth worrying about, you know. Whether or not you get that job, you can interview, you can submit your resume, and you can do all the things right. But at the end of the day, like whether or not you get that job is not in your hands, it's in God's hands, and so trusting that you know, the one who created you and who loves you knows better than you, and so yeah, like you can do as much as you can on your part, and I think there's still a part that we have to play, absolutely, but that doesn't always, you know, we we can't just like ask God, oh, give me opportunities, give me opportunities, and then not do anything to get those opportunities, you know. And so yeah, that's what I would remind myself.

Reading 2 Corinthians Chapter 4

SPEAKER_00

And now I'm just gonna kind of read through kind of my favorite passage. Okay, my favorite passage in scripture comes from 2 Corinthians chapter 4, and it's literally the whole chapter. So I'm gonna read it, and I'm reading out of NLT, New Living Translation, which is personally one of my favorites. Someone described it once as like the heart translation. Uh 2 Corinthians 4. Therefore, since God in his mercy has given us this new way, we never give up. We reject all shameful deeds and underhanded methods, we don't try to trick anyone or distort the word of God. We tell the truth before God, and all who are honest know this. If the good news we preach is hidden behind a veil, it is only hidden from people who are perishing. Satan, who is the God of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don't believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the good news. They don't understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God. You see, we don't go around preaching about ourselves. We preach that Jesus Christ is Lord, and we ourselves are your servants for Jesus' sake. For God who said, Let there be light in the darkness, has made this light shine in our hearts, so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ. We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves. We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed but not driven to despair. We are hunted down but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down but are not destroyed. Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies. Yes, we live under constant danger of death because we serve Jesus, so that the life of Jesus will be evident in our dying bodies. So we live in a face in the face of death, but this has resulted in eternal life for you. But we continue to preach because we have the same kind of faith that the psalmist said when he said, I believed in God, so I spoke. We know that God who raised Lord Jesus will also raise us with Jesus and present us to himself together with you. All of this is for your benefit, and as God's grace reaches more and more people, there will be a great thanksgiving, and God will receive more and more glory. This is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. For our present troubles are small and won't last very long, yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever. So don't look at the troubles we can see now. Rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but but the things we cannot see will last forever.

Fragile Jars And God’s Power

SPEAKER_00

Guys, I just love this passage and I just love it more every time I read it. And yeah, thank you, Jesus, for your word. My goodness. I love this passage so many for so many different reasons. I love how we are described like fragile clay jars where we are actually we're emotional, we are sinful, we are all these things, we are broken, like we are easily broken, we are cracked, we are fragile, like we uh tend to break really easily, or we tend to be crushed and we tend to be beaten up and all these things because of all the brokenness around us. But there is something greater in us that resides in us that is not something that we gave ourselves, you know, it was never something that we could have given ourselves, you know. If we could have paid the debt for our sins, we probably would have, you know, but we couldn't. Like the the price was too high. Jesus' death, that was when it was the perfect lamb, the ultimate sacrifice, that was the only thing that could pay our debt because that that covered it. That the blood of a perfect man who is also 100% God, 100% man, was what covered our sins and covered our debt. The brutal death of Jesus covered our debt. But only by his power, only by God's power are we able to receive this great treasure that we have. And not only that, like we get to shine and show it to everyone around us. You know, it's not just hidden for no one to see, but we have the ability to go out and share the light that God has given us and the treasure that God has given us. I also just love the like encouragement to like keep going. First verse. Therefore, since God in his mercy has given us this new way, we never give up. We reject shameful deeds, underhanded methods, we don't trick anyone or distort the word of God. So important. We don't distort the word of God, we tell the truth before God, and all who are honest know this. I just love this. We don't distort the word of God. The word of God, it's so important, and distorting it and twisting it is what the enemy does. And when we twist it, we are it's I really see it as it's just hurting God. Like it doesn't not only hurting him, but it's hard because we people have influence, even like you look at celebrities, you look at the people that you follow, and you know, we're obsessed with oh, what does this person post? What does this person say? How does this person act? What did they say in the interview? Like we are easily influenced by the voices that we listen to, and the people we listen to, the music artists you listen to, you are influenced by. They influence you. And so when we take the word of God or when we say stuff, it matters, and it matters how you say stuff, and it matters what you say according to scripture, it matters why you quote scripture, what you're the context of what you're saying stuff in, it matters. These verses, if you just like take one verse and cherry pick it out and go and and tell someone and use it out of context, like that is a big deal. That is a very big deal. The when Jesus was tempted for 40 days when he was in the wilderness, he was tempted by the devil, and he literally used scripture, the enemy used scripture against Jesus, was trying to get Jesus to turn his back on God and indulge in his in his flesh. And you know, Jesus was smart enough to know scripture to be able to back it up and actually know, actually, that's not what he means when you're saying when when he says this or when the word of when the word of God says that, or that's not the context of what that was in, but the word also says this, and so it's very important in the context of what you read scripture. So I love that. I love that. We tell the truth before God, and all who are honest know this. Love it.

Why Context Matters In Scripture

SPEAKER_00

I just and it's so fascinating because it talks about how um Satan is the God of this world, and that just like blows my mind. I think if we operated and if we remembered more that Satan is actually the God of this world, I think it's super I think it's super hard for the people who don't know Jesus because they don't see God or they don't see Satan as the God of this world because it's really hard to see. I think it's easier to be like, oh, if God were good, then this would happen, but all we see around us is brokenness, and that's because Satan is God of this world. It's like that is the exact reason why we live in brokenness and sin and horrible things that happen. That is exactly why, because Satan is the god of this world, and we just have to remember that if Satan's the God of this world, then this world, the things that it has to offer, it is temporary and they are unfulfilling. And the things that this world is going to offer you are most likely going to be from Satan, and the like the temporary things that are not satisfying, and that's why we have the word of God is these are like we have instructions and we have ways of living that are holy and that are pleasing to God and that actually lead us on a life to living in righteousness, and that's exactly what that is. But when you have Satan, the God of this world, and he's blinding the minds of those who don't believe, he's blinding the minds of those who don't believe. It's so if he can convince all the people, the people around you, your friends, your family, that God doesn't exist, then it's just as beneficial to him as the people who might even worship him. As long as someone doesn't believe in God, then it's great. He doesn't care if you don't believe in God or you even don't believe in him. He knows that. Like he's he's okay with that. He doesn't want you to believe in God or worship God or any of that, but he is the one blinding, blinding these minds of them. And because of that, they're unable to see the glorious light of the good news, and they don't understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is in the exact likeness of God. We have to unblind them with the help of Jesus, of course. There are things that you can do, there are things that I can do, there are ways that we can act, there are actions that people how we treat people says so much and will go so far, and we have to tell people about Jesus. And slowly seeds will be planted and the Lord will reveal himself to them. But be reminded that. People are being blinded to the glorious light of Christ and blinded by Satan, who is the God of this world, and reminded that this is a this world it we're living in, this world of brokenness, will not be forever. It is not going to be forever. And I love it, just talks about we don't we don't preach about ourselves.

Serving Others Without Making It About Us

SPEAKER_00

It's not about us. And honestly, it's humbling and it's it's great. Honestly, we have to remember that. I think the most, the best thing we can do as Christ followers is serve those around us and to take our mind off of ourselves and make it about other people. When we stay in situations and we consistently are in places in which we are only benefiting ourselves and doing things that benefit us, we forget about the real mission of serving other people and doing things for other people to make other people feel seen. That was something I did have to like the Lord convicted me of from a younger age of like where I wanted to serve in church and then me wanting to serve in this area, but someone was asking me to serve in a different area and I wasn't very happy about it, but I did it once and then I was annoyed because I kept getting put in there, and then the Lord really just convicted me because it was like, is this serving about you or is it about me? Because I was pretty sure the serving was about me and it wasn't actually about you. And I was like, Oh, you're right. Like there's a lot of things that we have, and maybe you're in a job right now, maybe you're in a nanny position right now, maybe you're in a position right now that you're like, I didn't see myself here, and I didn't want to be here 10 years ago, five years ago, whatever, last year. I didn't want to be here, but I am here, and this is where I'm at, and this is my job, and this is what I'm doing on the daily, and this is who I'm around. And maybe it's just the Lord asking you, Hey, will you serve me today? You know, there's a verse that says anything that we do for our brothers and sisters, we're also doing it for Jesus, and we're also doing it for Christ. And that's why it's so important that we are actually treating everyone around us like we would have treated Jesus, you know, and treated, you know, our brothers and sisters in Christ is because it's important how you treat them and how you see them and how you view them. It's just crucial for us to really serve others and do it humbly and intentionally and just continuously remind ourselves that it isn't about us. You know, at the end of the day, it was never about us, but it was about Jesus to be able to serve Jesus in a better way. And so literally love that. And we're ourselves our your servants for Jesus' sake. For God who said that let there be light and darkness, has made this light shine in our hearts so that we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ. You and me, we have a light, we have the upper hand, we are on the side of a savior who has conquered death, who will reign on the throne forever, and who will come down and and defeat darkness and sin once and for all. It's coming, it's not here yet, but it's coming. We already serve someone who has defeated death and he will come and he will do it all again and forever reign on the throne. There is no reason you shouldn't follow someone who died on a cross to save your save you and save your life and give you fulfillment in the rest of your life and make you feel purpose and make you feel seen and loved. There is no one in the world, there is nothing in the world, there's no drug, there's no drink, there is no medicine, there's no witchcraft, there is nothing that will ever fill you like Jesus will, and he gives us the opportunity to love him back and gives us the best gift we've ever been given, and we should not take it for granted, and we should live with the light that he has given us, and he has given us a light that we are able to shine to show his glory to all of his people and the people around him who he wants to call home and he wants to call closer to him. This is this verse, this verse, guys. We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God and not from ourselves. Gosh, I just love that. I just love that constant reminder. The light that I carry, the joy that I carry, never from myself, never something that I could have given myself, never something that I could have done, a platform, a stage, a microphone means nothing without Jesus. It really doesn't, it doesn't, it means nothing without Jesus. This verse,

Pressed But Not Crushed Through Trials

SPEAKER_00

too. If you are going through trials, tribulation, whatever it is, I love this verse, and this verse is for you. We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed but not driven to despair. We are hunted down but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed. Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies. Guys, that is so good. That is so good. No matter what trial you go through, no matter what problems come your way, what sickness, whatever comes that is trying to destroy you, there is nothing that cannot be covered and that cannot be restored by the blood of Jesus. And there's nothing that could happen to you, nothing that could ever separate you from the love of Jesus. That you will be pressed on every side, but you could not be crushed. God will never abandon you as much as you get hunted down. I mean, we see we see so many people throughout scripture, especially David, and he is being chased by Saul, I believe. Uh he's being chased, and just he's like in the wilderness praying to God, and he's being, you know, hunted, and it's crazy. Like the things that happened between from when God said I was gonna make you a king, and then all the things that happened in between. It's like, where are we going with this? But he was hunted down, but God never left him. You can get knocked down, but you could not get destroyed. Like God will still protect you. And it's actually through the suffering that we experience, and it's through the pain we experience that we are able to actually share about the death of Jesus and the brutality that he experienced and the suffering he experienced, but we are also able to share the life that God gives us through his suffering, and that while we deal with our suffering, that we can actually through our suffering, we are able to share the joy of Jesus in the life of Jesus and the life that we can also be seen through our bodies. Like that is literally incredible to me and mind-boggling to me, to be honest with you. I love it. Yes, we live under constant danger of death because we serve Jesus. Yes. So that the life of Jesus will be evident in our dying bodies. So we live in the face of death, but this has resulted in eternal life for you, guys. Death is not

Eternal Life And Choosing Jesus

SPEAKER_00

the end. If you believe in Jesus, you can have eternal life. And you, and it's not, it's not hard to get just asking Jesus to be in your heart and live with you forever. You can spend eternity with Jesus. You just have to want to spend your life with him now and give your life to him and live with him and live obediently to him. And none of those things are like, oh, you have to do these things to earn an eternal life. Literally, all you have to do is accept Jesus into your heart, believe that he died on the cross for your sins and accept him as Savior, and you can live with Jesus forever and you can spend eternity with him. All of the other things are things you should do once you give your life to Jesus and you experience salvation. You should want to be like Jesus. You should want to be holy, you should have a desire to be as close to him as you can get, and you should have a desire to run from the things that don't get you close to him. And you should have a desire to, you know, know more about him and be curious about him and grow, grow in relationship with him. And those should be like a result of oh, I have met Jesus and I know Jesus, and now I want to live my life honoring and glorifying him. So I love that. But we continue to preach because we have the same kind of faith the psalmist said when he said, I believed in God, so I spoke. And we know that God who raised Lord Jesus will also raise us with Jesus. Yes, so good. And present us to himself together with you. All of this is for your benefit. And as God God's grace reaches more and more people, there will be a great thanksgiving, and God will receive more and more glory. All of it, more and more glory for God. I love it. This is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. He renews your spirit every day. Every day you wake up and you tell yourself, you have a renewed spirit day by day, day by day. You may be perplexed, you may be pressed on every side, you may be hunted down, you may be knocked down, but you are not destroyed, you're never abandoned, you're not driven to despair, you're not crushed. And every day our spirits are being renewed, for our present troubles are small and won't last very long, yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever. So we do not look at the troubles that we can see now. Rather, we fix our eyes on gaze that cannot be seen, for the things that we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever. Thank you, Jesus, for your word. And

Final Encouragement And Sendoff

yeah, so just encouragement. You do not have to have it all figured out. The storms will come, the troubles will come. Use your suffering as a way to point back to the life of Jesus and the death of Jesus. Verse 10 through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies. Go and show people Jesus and be reminded that your life doesn't have to be perfect to follow Jesus. In fact, your life won't be perfect if you follow Jesus, and just use that as a testimony to God's goodness and God's grace and the things that He has already done in your life and the ways Jesus has already changed your life through suffering. That doesn't this will not mean that your life is perfect, but it does mean that you have a way to touch the people around you and the hearts around you and share about the love of Jesus and how Jesus has impacted you and grown you and how he has changed your life because I know he's changed mine, and yeah, if he can do it for me, he can do it for you. And so love you guys all so much. Have a great rest of your day. Don't forget to savor the savior.
